About each system

Raast

Pakistan's instant payment system launched by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) as part of its Digital Pakistan vision. Raast (meaning "direct path" in Urdu) enables 24/7 real-time transfers between banks and fintech providers via IBAN, mobile number (Raast ID), or CNIC (national ID). Designed with ISO 20022 messaging from the ground up, Raast supports P2P, P2M, and bulk/salary disbursements. With Pakistan's 220M+ population and only ~30% banked, Raast is a critical financial inclusion tool. It also includes a request-to-pay feature and plans for QR-based merchant payments.

RTP

The first modern US instant payment system, operated by The Clearing House (owned by 22 of the largest US banks). RTP launched in 2017 and supports credit transfers up to $10M (raised from $1M in February 2025, which is why network value jumped sharply that year) with immediate finality β€” no chargebacks or returns. It also offers Request for Payment (RfP) messaging for bill pay and invoicing. While FedNow provides Fed-backed infrastructure, RTP has a head start with broader bank connectivity and higher transaction limits, and processes the majority of US instant payment volume today.
